Why Not All H Cup Bras Are the Same
Although H cup is a recognised UK bra size, not all H cups have the same volume. This is because different UK cup letter sequences are used by different brands, even though the underlying sizing rule is the same.
Bra cup sizes are determined by the difference between the band size and the fullest bust measurement. Each increase of 1 inch in that difference equals one cup size in the UK sizing system.
The difference between brands is not how the size is calculated, but which letters are used to label each step. Traditional UK brands follow a shorter sequence: B, C, D, DD, E, F, G, H, J, K.
Fuller-bust specialist brands use an extended UK cup sequence that includes additional double letters: D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H, HH, J, JJ, K, KK, L, LL.
Each step in the UK cup size sequence represents a 1 inch increase in the difference between the underband and the fullest bust measurement. This rule applies to all UK brands, regardless of whether they use a traditional or extended cup letter sequence.
The only difference between brands is how those 1-inch steps are labelled. Because extended sizing inserts additional steps such as FF and GG, a traditional-sequence H cup is equivalent in volume to an extended-sequence G cup.
As a result, an extended-sequence H cup is two full cup sizes larger than a traditional-sequence H cup. The measurements increase in exactly the same way — only the letters change.
This difference is not related to support, quality or construction. It is simply the result of using different cup letter progressions. Both systems are valid UK sizing methods, but they are not interchangeable by letter alone.
A cup size is not one fixed volume. Cup volume increases as the band size increases, so a 30H, 36H and 44H are all very different in fit and capacity, even though the cup letter is the same.
When comparing bras, brands or sizes, always consider both band size and cup size together.

Common Fit Issues for H Cup Bras
- Spillage or cutting in at the neckline
- Underwires sitting on breast tissue
- Straps taking too much weight
- Bands riding up or stretching too quickly
- Bras losing support during the day
Specialist fuller-bust brands address these issues using firmer bands, deeper cups and reinforced construction.
Can I Sister Size Instead of Wearing an H Cup?
Sister sizing may work temporarily but is rarely ideal for H cup wearers. Moving up a band and down a cup often reduces support and changes cup shape. If you are consistently sister sizing, it usually means the brand or cup structure is not right for you.

H Cup Bra FAQs
Do all brands use the same H cup sizing?
No. While H cup is a recognised UK size, brands use different cup letter sequences.
Traditional brands use a shorter progression, while fuller-bust brands use extended sequences with FF, GG and HH cups.
As a result, H cups can vary significantly in volume.
Is a UK H cup the same as a US H cup?
No. US sizing uses a different cup structure.
A US H cup is smaller in volume than a UK H cup from extended UK sizing brands.
Always use conversion charts rather than relying on the letter alone.
Does band size affect H cup volume?
Yes. Cup volume increases with band size.
A 38H holds more volume than a 32H, even though the cup letter is the same.
Can H cup bras be supportive without wires?
Some non-wired styles exist, but most H cup wearers achieve the best lift and long-term support from underwired bras.
